Darts
I’m not a big dart player. Having bartended for years, I probably should be. But to be honest, I always found it less interesting than bar games like pool or foosball. Also, I’m not even sure how the scoring works, so I imagine my lack of passion is somewhat related to this.
However, last week I saw an incredible video of a dart tournament. Specifically, one player’s introduction at said dart tournament.
The player stood in the middle of a huge crowd at one end of a walkway surrounded by barricades. As the song Titanium (by David Guetta, featuring SIA on vocals) blared, the player lifted his arms, encouraging the crowd to cheer more and more loudly.
As he walked in between the crowd, he stopped to take selfies, hug fans, and give high fives.
The audience sang along with every word, and when reached the stage, he sang along with them.
While I won’t comment on the dart player’s appearance, I will say that he likely wouldn’t make the cut as one of People Magazine’s Sexiest Men Alive.
But I don’t get, watching this video, that he cares about that at all.
And that’s my point.
To go big, you have to go big.
This guy could make every excuse on earth to shyly walk to the stage, take care of his business, and leave. To keep his head down. To try to go unnoticed.
And that’s totally fine for lots of people. But not for people who want to inspire others, who know they need people on their side to do great things, and who want to be memorable.
I know so many leaders would benefit from having a fraction of this guy’s showmanship. I know so many leaders who do things halfway, worried about how people will react. I know so many leaders who are unwilling to put themselves out there like this guy.
Why? Because some people might not respond well, and that’s too nerve-wracking for many to even risk it. But that’s why I chose this guy. He’s not Christiano Ronaldo. He’s not Taylor Swift. He’s not someone who’s world-renowned with fans in every crack and crevice of the globe.
He’s a middle-aged dart player. He’s also a total badass. Or, he acts like one. And maybe, that’s something you should do more often.
Check him out here.
