Ten Nos In a Row
I watched a video from business guru, Myron Golden, recently. In it, he described a game he created called, “Ten Nos in a Row.”
The object of the game is simple. Golden would pitch people on the product he was selling with the sole purpose of getting them to say, “No.”
If at some point in the process of trying to get ten nos in a row, Golden were to get a “Yes” he would start over.
Golden’s theory was that one of the reasons people don’t achieve their full potential is because they’re afraid of people saying no to them. So Golden flipped the script entirely. He sought out no. He got comfortable with no. He built up his resistance to hearing no.
This resonated deeply. Not just for the people I coach, but for myself as well.
So here’s a challenge.
Right now, there’s something you want or need that likely, you don’t have a great chance of getting. Maybe it’s more air time with your boss. Maybe it’s a promotion. Maybe it’s to bring on a partner. Maybe it’s something personal like selling your house and moving your family 1,000 miles away. I don’t know what yours is, but you do.
So ask for it. With the intention of getting a no. Now, don’t ask for it in a way that will ensure you get a no.
Don’t say, “Hey, idiot. Give me a promotion or I’ll fight you.”
But ask for the thing that you think you have very little chance of getting. Get a no. See how it feels.
I’m going to join you on this. Let’s get better at dealing with resistance together.
And if you do it, send me an email to tell me how it felt.
